Plain-Language Summary

This study explored how recovery capital, the internal and external resources that support long-term recovery, grows over time in recovery residences using the REC-CAP tool. Administered by peers at admission and repeated every 90 days, REC-CAP tracked key changes in residents’ strengths and barriers. Findings showed that people who weren’t actively using substances and who had stable housing needs were more likely to stay in their residence and make progress in their recovery capital.

The study also found that improving psychological wellbeing, addressing housing needs, and building social support were critical to helping residents reduce barriers and grow stronger in recovery. However, concerning disparities were noted; these findings point to the need for more personalized, holistic support systems in recovery residences, especially for those facing higher risks or systemic inequities.
